I want to find the 'voices' of a place or situation, voices that can speak most powerfully about a place / situation and about our experience in and with it. I consider myself an ecologist of sound. Composer of soundscapes, soundwalks, film soundtracks, and radio art, Hildegard Westerkamp is one of the most widely known champions of acoustic ecology. She is especially known for developing the soundwalk as an artform, as Andra McCartney describes it, "based on listening to the sounds of a place, and using electronic means to subtly highlight the voices of that place, drawing attention to its sonic specificities and musicalities."Her music has been commissioned by CBC Radio, Canada Pavilion at Expo '86, Ars Electronica (Linz), Osterreichischer Rundfunk ... She received Honorable Mentions in competitions such as Prix Ars Electronica (Austria), Prix Italia, and the International Competition for Electroacoustic Music in Bourges (France), as well as a Recommendation for Broadcast from the International Music Council's 4th International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music ... Her articles have been published in Radio Rethink, Kunstforum, Musicworks ... A founding member of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, Westerkamp has been a researcher for R. Murray Schafer's World Soundscape Project, and she has taught acoustic communication at Simon Fraser University.Based in Vancouver, Westerkamp travels widely, conducting soundscape workshops throughout the world. |
