My music is all about a critique of America's notions of pluralism and diversity -- assimilation or pluralism. In my music you'll find a place where all aspects of the creative act -- notions of individuality, collective cultural production, linear and non-linear forms of thought ... are questioned ... as a way to figure out the puzzles and paradoxes of a culture of extreme speed based on some sort of cultural voyeurism. 'Who speaks through you?' my mom used to say. It's a phrase that hangs over me every time I sample a sound and put it into my mixes ... Conceptual artist, writer, musician. Miller is a pioneer in the 'illbient' music scene as part of New York's Soundlab collective. His music derives its key elements from a cross-section of urban youth cultures such as hip hop, ambient, trip-hop, and jungle. His tag as 'That Subliminal Kid' refers to William Burrough's novel, Nova Express. As he explains: "The Subliminal Kid breaks into the Reality Studio. The Nova Mob is taking over planet Earth's mind screens and it's sending out hate signals ... The Subliminal Kid breaks their loop structures."As a musician, Miller has collaborated with Iannis Xenakis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Butch Morris, Kool Keith a.k.a. Doctor Octagon, Killa Priest from Wu-Tang Clan, Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth ... His work as an artist has appeared in the Whitney Biennial, The Venice Biennial for Architecture, Ludwig Museum (Cologne), Kunsthalle (Vienna), The Andy Warhol Museum and most recently the Mass MOCA Manufacturing series... His written work has appeared in The Village Voice, The Source, Artforum ... He is editor-at-large of Artbyte: The Magazine of Digital Culture, and co-publisher of A Gather of the Tribes, a periodical dedicated to multi-cultural writing.
