For over fifty years, the French born Baschet brothers created amazing and eccentric acoustic musical sculptures using industrial materials such as sheet metal, glass rods, and water. Welcoming these sculptors, and their bizarre instruments, into the realm of fine art, the Baschet brothers had their first major exhibit at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1960. Baschet: The Transfiguration of Daily Life presents candid interviews with the Baschets near the height of their fame in 1963 and footage of the brothers and other composers playing the unique instruments. Baschet encompasses the brothers’ beliefs, that public participation is crucial to the vitality of the fine arts, with footage from international public exhibitions in New York, France, and Expo ’70 in Tokyo.
