With the aid of electronic computers the composer becomes a sort of pilot ... sailing in the space of sound, across sonic constellations and galaxies ... . Composer of instrumental and electronic music, is among the most radical of 20th-century composers. He is widely recognized for his early work in electronic music, his use of stochastic processes in his compositions, and his use of computers in composing and generating sounds. His music has been performed widely throughout the world. His publications include Musiques Formelles (published in English as Formalized Music) as well as numerous articles on music and architecture. He was one of the founding members of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in 1958 and the founder of CEMAMu (Centre d'Etudes de Mathématique et Automatiques Musicales / Center for Studies in Mathematics and Automated Music) in 1972. He has been on the faculties of the University of Indiana (Bloomington), Gresham College (London), and elsewhere. His honors include a grant from the Ford Foundation and appointment as Knight in the Greek Phoenix Legion and Commander in the French National Order of Merit. He was a recipient of the prestigious Kyoto Prize. Accessed 14.10.06 from http://www.eartotheearth.org/artists/xenakis.html)
